Making a Claim on your Motor Insurance Policy

Promptly report any incidents involving your vehicle to us, even if you do not intend to make a claim or you believe you were not at fault. Failing to report or cooperate may jeopardise your coverage, leaving you liable for any resulting claims.

If contacted by a third party, do not admit liability; direct them to your insurer. Send crucial details within the first few hours or days of an accident to prevent prejudicing potential claims against you.

Provide:

  • Policy number, personal details, and contact information
  • Vehicle details
  • Date, time, location, and circumstances of the incident
  • Details of involved parties, damage, injuries, and witnesses
  • Any relevant documentation or footage

If you cannot supply all this information straight away, you should still report the incident to us as soon as possible. If not at fault, we may assist in recovering your uninsured losses.

Note: As of May 31st, 2021, changes in the law affect low-value personal injury claims. Our team will guide you through these changes.

For claims under other insurance policies (e.g. Home or Vehicle assistance), contact your insurer using the details provided in your policy document.

Involved in an accident?

If your car is involved in an accident, regardless of fault, follow these steps if:

  • Your car is damaged
  • Someone other than yourself is injured
  • Damage is caused to another vehicle or someone else’s property
  • An animal is killed or injured, except in your own vehicle or trailer

Then:

  • Stop and remain at the scene
  • Provide your vehicle registration, name, address, and the vehicle owner’s details (if different) to anyone requesting

If details aren’t exchanged at the scene, report the accident to the police within 24 hours.

If another person is injured:

  • Show your insurance certificate if requested
  • If not, report the accident to the police within 24 hours. They may ask you to produce your insurance certificate within seven days

You must personally report the accident to the police; telephone reports or delegations are not acceptable. These obligations apply even if your vehicle’s ‘presence’ was a factor.

What to do at the scene of an accident

Note down a detailed description of the incident by gathering as much information – photographs and notes – at the scene:

Include details such as:

  • Scene: Date, time, location, weather, traffic, road signs.
  • Vehicles: Make, model, registration, colour, condition, estimated speed, direction, lights/indicators, passengers.
  • People: Contact info, driver(s), description, passengers, witnesses, police involvement.
  • Damage: Vehicle/property damage, injuries sustained.
